Also, my friends' site: www.tomzuba.com may be a good place to have a cup of tea or glass of wine.

hi judy, i was a caregiver for my husband; travelled the road for 4 years with him. at the time of diagnosis they gave him 3 months. he went on hospice shortly before his death.... at home...it was a bumpy road. i know the fears and feelings, and am here to share some of your burden. there are so many of us out there. carol

Judy:  I found that when I was on Oxaliplatin I could not drink cold drinks and hot (warm) chocolate was a life saver.  At least it kept me from getting dehydrated as that was all I could drink.  Carol

Judy

best wishes. I, too, took a long break from this website for a while after a friend of mine here died. IT was months before I came back online. I am coming up on my 2-year stage IV mark, and I"m currently NED after two sage IV recurrences. The statistics out there are old - people are living years past the 2-3 year mark with stage IV disease. There are people here 5+ years past their diagnosis. You don't know how long your husband has, nobody does, but there is some hope on the horizon for a longer, more normal life. Come back if and when you are ready, and take some time to take care of yourself.

Hey Judy - I'm no doctor, but what you are feeling is very normal, and I hear it alot. I think it's more like Post traumatic stress syndrome. You've been fighting and worrying about him and just going, going, going. Now, you find yourself in this great situation of him doing so well, and you just can't relax about it.
Give it time, keep talking to each other and do your best to stay in the NOW - tonight, tomorrow, the next day. Those poor soles in Poland got on that plane with no idea it was going to be their last day on this earth - none of us do. Use the cancer as a gift to enjoy each and every day because you realize the gift it is. I think this is why so many folks say their cancer experience has been a blessing - that they enjoy their lives MORE because they treasure each day.

Having said all that, you may find it beneficial to find a counselor as well or post on the message board this feeling, and I guarantee you will start a thread and won't feel alone and know you are amongst friends who feel the same way.

I'm on the helpline all week if you need to talk more in person. 877-422-2030

maybe it's time to start/increase meditation, exercise, reading, movies - things to help distract you and quiet your mind.
fondly,
jeannie

Hey Judy - sorry with my delay here - just got back from a baseball tournament for my son. First, I"m glad you are going to have Grothey as your doc. I believe his experience and the NUMBER of colon cancer patients he sees will be far greater than your local guy.
Second, i suspect he is going by his experience - and he probably doesn't see too many colon cancer patients, but it's probably his experience that most folks who have an elevated CEA do have the cancer come back within a few months - this by no means mean it will happen to your husband.
Sounds like he is doing great! Keep up whatever you are doing and try your best to celebrate the now and his stability!

Dr. Grothey is a top doc - no doubt about it. I never claimed to know anything per say Judy or question Grothey's reasoning. This is why I'd rather chat on the phone which I understand may not be feasible, but we are crossing wires here and causing confusion - which I apologize for.

The language Laura and I questioned is the "remission" statement. Neither of us have heard a doc used that term with elevated CEA. Again, doesn't mean we are right or wrong. Both of us have said many things can cause a rise in CEA other than cancer including this infection from a boil.

I would feel confident with Grothey's treatment plan. I am on the helpline tomorrow if there was any chance you could call between 9:30-4:30 EST and we can review everything so we understand the questions and the answers. If not, we'll do our best this way.

Hi Judy - I did get a chance to quickly talk with Laura - she was also confused with the language here considering the CEA was over 100; however, we can't make a judgment without more information.

I believe it is always in a patient's best interest to get second and third opinion especially when we're talking surgical. Some surgeons won't consider a liver resection with disease in lung etc., and others will.
